THE DRIVE TO OWN A HOUSE is killing us. It has turned every mortgage holder, of every city condo and every house in a suburb, into a property speculator. Each and every one looking to “make a killing” in a red hot housing market.

THE COCKROACH POSTER made it plain. The 23 tenants at 12 Lansdowne Ave. in Toronto were no pushovers. They were gong to make their fight to avoid evictions something else again. They did. And it worked.

STAND TOGETHER AND YOU’LL WIN. That’s the age old union story. And it’s true. It happened again in early April for 20 workers in a women’s shelter in Napanee, Ontario. They won their strike. Got a decent settlement. Good for them. But nothing very important beyond that. Except for the fact that what they did together reminds us where our true strengths and all our collective hopes lie.

REAL DEMOCRACY IS A PROBLEM for city officials in Halifax. It’s messing with their plans to evict homeless people from a “People’s Park” encampment in a city park. Volunteer activists flatly rejected a request from the city to collaborate in city efforts to dismantle the encampment. Democracy made them do it.
